Ignite Youth Retreat 2007

“God, Use Me, Fill Me, and Set Me On Fire”

Do you like garlic? How about spicy sardines? Can you drink a bag of milk in a minute? Just a few questions answered during our fall retreat. We also determined who can drink a can of pop… through their own day old sock, drink 3 cups of prune juice & be willing to cut four inches of hair off!

The weekend started off Friday night with some great worship music, a message from Pastor Blair and the introduction to the games by the splitting up into 3 teams & the first challenge – Do you want to consume cold ravioli, a McDonald’s Happy Meal or … and then YOUR own buddies blended the Happy Meal!

Friday night, Pastor Blair talked about sin, and how, frankly, we often continue to sin because we enjoy it at the time. But there is always a cost. We also need to consider that if we are fearfully & wonderfully made, and that God has plans to prosper us & not to harm us, then perhaps we need to ask God to help us do what he made me to be.

On Saturday, sleep in, games at 1000, brunch at 1130, afternoon service, capture the flag (pink vs blue; pink 1 game & a draw).

We looked at the lives of Abraham, Ezra, Nehmiah and Paul. About how sometimes Satan will try to put friendly people into our lives to try and hinder us from getting done the tasks God has for us to do (like the Israelites rebuilding the temple & Jeusalem’s walls in the time of Ezra & Nehamiah).

And we looked at 1Samuel 14 & Jonathan (King Saul’s son) as an example of different ways we could live – by doing, asking or seeing.

Jonathan and his armour bearers were Doers. Not prepared to sit around, but with their mind & heart’s tuned to God, they went and approached the enemy – and with God’s help & blessing, the entire enemy was routed by the actions of just two men.

King Saul was one who Asked: “What’s going on?” He was sitting in the shade under a tree. Only when Jonathan did, was he able to inquire what God was doing.

The Israelite army scouts Saw the great commotion of the Philistine army in rout.

We need to be like Jonathan in this world – Doing what God calls us to do, rather than seeing the commotion or asking “What’s happening?”

In the end, our prayer was that “God, Use Me, Fill Me & Set Me on Fire!”
